Montreal’s romance lies in the switch - the casual bounce between English, and French. Our little franglais has its own rhythm and cadence. Francophones, anglophones, allophones all drawing on whatever we have in our linguistic pockets to make a conversation. I wanted to bring the fun of that local language and rhythm into a song.
— Lou Laurence

Montréal on a Dating App is featured prominently in Lou’s music-comedy show, Love, Sharks & Frenching, which she toured across Canada and to Europe. “In the show, I get the crowd to join in a singalong of the conjugations of se frencher which is always a great time. It was really fun to try to keep some of that play in the full-band arrangement with the tight punches and the groovy swing.”

Lou Laurence is a Montreal-based, award-winning singer, comedian, songwriter, producer, and improviser described by Radio-Canada as, “a breath of fresh air and energy.” Lou's signature style blends her deep, jazzy voice with her sharp wit, catchy melodies, storytelling, and improvised lyrics. Her voice dances between the smooth and soulful tones of Amy Winehouse and the raw and rugged texture of Janis Joplin.

She toured her solo show, Love, Sharks & Frenching: a hot date w/ Lou Laurence, across Canada and to Prague, Czechia. She has been featured in OFF Just for Laughs, Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival, Newfoundland & Labrador Sketchfest, Montreal Sketchfest, Toronto's Comedy is Art festival, and the DéBark Improv Festival. Lou is perhaps best known in Quebec for her work with DJ Champion (best known for ‘No Heaven’) as lead singer and co-songwriter on his 2016 album, Best Seller. Lou toured with Champion and performed on Quebec’s biggest television programs, Belle et Bum, Gala Artis, and Gala Célébration.

Lou graduated from the Music Theatre program at Etobicoke School of the Arts in Toronto before heading to the University of Victoria for a BFA in Creative Writing with a focus in Poetry. She then moved to Montreal to complete a Masters in English Literature with a Creative Thesis combining songs and poetry.

From there, Lou continued as a solo artist touring to the UK and around Canada. In recent years, she developed her solo performances to foreground humour, storytelling, and intimacy.

Lou is bilingual and Franglais features prominently in her work. Montreal is at the heart of Love, Sharks & Frenching as it is at the heart of her upcoming album, Montréal Romantic. Lou draws inspiration from the way in which languages blend together in Montreal’s local vocabulary and brings this language play into her work as a celebration of multilingualism in a community where it is often treated by politicians as an issue instead of an asset.
